Gender Based Pay - 1060 Words

Over the generations society’s view of women has changed drastically; but these changes are not done yet. It will still take a long time for the necessary changes to occur. The stereotypical view of women is for them to be house wives. Their duties are to take care of the home and children; clean the home, dishes, laundry, and feed and raise the children to name a few. The Huff Post stated in an article, â€Å"Women still earned only 77 cents for every dollar that men earned in 2012, according to new data from the U.S. Census Bureau† (Women). Many forms of legislation have been put into place over the years to try and correct this but it is still a major problem today. Legislation such as the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, Equal Employment†¦show more content†¦This legislation also does not take into account that women, if they are the primary care giver, will need to take extra time off for children. With this in mind, the employers can pay a male more with the reasoning that they are not a liability to the company. Males will not have to leave early due to children; they will not have to take time off ahead of time for children’s activities, and will also not have to leave for emergencies with children. This legislation has a large loophole that lets employers do this. (Equal Pay Act) By closing this loophole, women will also be able to break the â€Å"glass ceiling†. Merriam-Webster dictionary defines that glass ceiling as, â€Å"an unfair system or set of attitudes that prevents some people (such as women or people of a certain race) from getting the most powerful jobs† (Merriam-Webster). The last act mentioned, the Equal Employment Opportunity Act, only guarantees the persons a chance at the job, or the possibility of getting the job. This means that when an employer is hiring, they must advertise that they are not discriminating. The company cannot refuse to interview a person on the basis of religion, sex, gender, age, or race. This act does not guarantee that the employer can hire based on these criteria. A company can hire they’re ideal persons from a large group and pick out only males if the interviewer prefers males. If input prices varies across ountries, it becomes profitable for the firm to split the production chain. Vertical FDI consists of two groups: backward and forward vertical FDI. In case of backward FDI multinational enterprise establishes its own supplier of input goods which delivers inputs to the parent company. Conducting forward FDI, the firm builds up a foreign affiliate, which draws inputs from the parent company for own production, thus staying after the parent in the production chain. Platform FDI : Foreign direct investment from a source country into a destination country for the purpose of exporting to a third country. Horizontal FDI decreases international trade as the product of them is usually aimed at host country; the two other types generally act as a stimulus for it. Green Field Investment direct investment in new facilities or the expansion of existing facilities. Greenfield investments are the primary target of a host nations promotional efforts because they create new production capacity and Jobs, transfer technology and know-how, and can lead to linkages to the global marketplace. However, it often does this by crowding out local industry; multinationals are able to produce goods more cheaply because of advanced technology and efficient processes) and uses up resources (labor, intermediate goods, etc). Another downside of greenfield investment is that profits from production do not feed back into the local economy, but instead to the multinationals home economy. This is in contrast to local industries whose profits flow back into the domestic economy to promote growth. Mergers And Acquisition occur when a transfer of existing assets from local firms to foreign firms takes place, this is the primary type of FDI. Cross-border mergers occur when the assets and operation of firms from different countries are combined to stablish a new legal entity. Cross-border acquisitions occur when the control of assets and operations is transferred from a local to a foreign company, with the local company becoming an affiliate of the foreign company. Unlike greenfield investment, acquisitions provide no long term benefits to the local economy even in most deals the owners of the local firm are paid in stock from the acquiring firm, meaning that the money from the sale could never reach the local economy. Nevertheless, mergers and acquisitions are a significant form of FDI and until around 1997, accounted for nearly 90% of the FDI flow into the United States.

Evolution of the submarine, as a technology, and it role in the American identity essays

Evolution of the submarine, as a technology, and it role in the American identity essays There is always a love for adventure in most men and the feelings must be the highest in a land of pioneers, the United States; and this spirit will naturally find its best expression in a situation where the unknown is the highest - in the land filled with dark still sea waters. Americans have had a historic association with the submarines and the fleet celebrated its centenary in the year 2000, for which the preparations had been going on for a long time. The first submarine of the country was accepted by the Navy on a day in spring of the year 1900. This ship was known as the submarine boat called USS Holland and is numbered as (SS 1). The acceptance was of course after a lot of trials. These were so extensive that the pioneer had to sell his shipyard to his battery supplier, and under the new ownership the yard supplied a large number of ships to the navy. The demonstration trials were held off Mount Vernon on the Potomac River. The submarine was only 54 foot long and was incapable of going out into the open sea. The spirit of the submariner has always had this strange ongoing battle with the elements for superiority over nature, with the aid of technology. (Fleet Ballistic Missile Submarines - SSBN) This may be said to be the principle problem and reflected in the form of improvement of underwater endurance and performance. This is more determined by the ship than by the individual. In the beginning this caused a lot of difficulties in the design of the submarine itself. The United States is a relatively young country and the first record of submarine activity is from the Nile Valley in Egypt. There we are able to see many wall paintings that show people hunting ducks with spears for the birds. They are not chasing them on land, but slowly moving up to them hidden in the depths of...

The effects of human cloning Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

The effects of human cloning - Essay Example Human cloning is also faces the risk of being misused, and is shows a lack of respect for the individuals involved as well as respect for the mystery of procreation of human beings. Moreover, it lead to serious psychological problems for both the parent and the child. Other problems have to do with that its long-term effects are unidentified, it poses concerns regarding lack of originality, individuality, identity formation, gender identity, identification, as well as problems to do with cognitive development and social emotional development. Introduction Cloning is a reproduction method that refers to the asexual production of genetically identical organisms either through nuclear transfer, which has to do with the substitution of a nucleus in the egg by another nucleus, or through the division of an embryo. Cloning involves copying or duplicating an individual or a cell from its DNA, and the result is a clone. Cloning in animals is attained through embryonic cloning where a fertili zed egg is split into two or more parts at a very early embryonic stage, yielding two or more identical beings. It is also attained through somatic cloning where identical beings are produced from adult animals’ cells – under specified conditions, an anucleated ovum fertilizes a somatic cell’s nucleus leading to cell division, and it becomes a fetus. For decades, people have done cloning in dozens plants (vegetables and fruits) by deliberately reproducing genetic replicas of parents with desirable qualities as well as quantities. However, the first successful attempt of cloning in mammals is exemplified by formation of a Scottish sheep called Dolly through a process known as somatic cell nuclear transfer. This grabs the attention of scientists – they thought that if plants and animals could be cloned, there was a possibility that humans too could be cloned (Yadav & Sharma, 2011 and Islam, et al. 2012). Yadav and Sharma (2011) explain that a geneticist kno wn as Joshua Lederberg, is credited coming up with the prospects and promise of human cloning. Today, â€Å"human cloning has become a real possibility† with the rise of reproductive cloning technology – through it, parents are given the ability â€Å"to choose a desirable genotype for one’s offspring† (Shapshay, 2012) or the ability to exercise their control/desires on the identity of the children they want to have. Yadav and Sharma (2011) identify three types of cloning. The first one is reproductive cloning, which produces an individual that has identical nuclear DNA as the parent. Reproductive cloning uses somatic cell transfer process as discussed in previously. The second type of cloning is DNA Cloning or Recombinant DNA Technology, which is done by cell- based technique, a process that involves cutting off DNA fragment from the chromosomal DNA and attaching it to a plasmid. The gene of interests is attached to its vector forming a recombination DNA molecule. DNA Cloning or Recombinant DNA Technology, is also done using polymerase chain reaction technique whereby when all cells divide, enzymes known as polymerases create a copy of the whole DNA in every chromosome. The two DNA chains of the double helix are separated making a copy, each strand acting as a template. This technique is faster and uses a very small portion of target DNA. The third type of cloning is therapeutic cloning, referred also to as embryo cloning, somatic cell nuclear transfer, research cloning, cloning for biomedical research or cell

Global warming Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words - 3

Global warming - Essay Example Researchers have warned that if the global warming effect is not contained, then life will be virtually impossible in the next three decades to come. As a result, urgent action to mitigate the global warming effect is in the offing. This discourse explores the global warming as an environmental issue in light of the situation, consequences, and solution. The paper will conclude by providing recommendations for the world leaders. Table of Contents Table of Contents 3 Introduction 4 Situation 4 Effects of Global Warming 6 Solution 7 Conclusion and Recommendation 7 References 8 Global Warming Introduction Stoyles, Pentland, and Demant (2003) argue that climate change is one of the most disturbing environmental problems facing the world today. Environmentalists have shown that no planet or country is spared of the devastating effects of climate change. The climate change has mainly been blamed on the global warming effects. Maslin (2007) noted that the change in climate being witnessed i n the world today is attributed to the excessive emissions of greenhouse gases that cause global warming. Scientists have shown that greenhouse gases produced from fossil fuels once released to the atmosphere blocks the ozone layer thereby resulting in global warming (Maslin 2007). The impacts of global warming are a big problem to the world today. ... Situation The world is suffering from the devastating effects of climate change. The problem is attributed to global warming that has seen the planet’s average temperatures warm up at an alarming rate. Several studies indicate that the last two decades have been the hottest in four millennia. The global warming problem has resulted in extreme weather patterns, including strong tropical storms, wildfires, prolonged drought, rising sea levels and heat waves just to name but a few (Natural Resources Defense Council, 2012). In fact, the global warming menace has made prediction of weather patterns extremely difficult for weathermen today. According to Ploutz (2011), the level of greenhouse, emissions have increased by at least 70% between 1970 and 2004 due to human activities. This huge increase in pollutants has caused a very big problem to the planet’s natural temperatures. The level of carbon dioxide emissions, for example, has increased by over 80% during the same perio d. Union of Concerned Scientists (2013) noted that the society is emitting more carbon into the atmosphere more than oceans and plants can absorb. According to Shah, the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is currently about 385 parts per million (PPM) and keeps increasing by about 2 PPM annually due to the excessive burning of fossil fuels such as oil, coal and natural gas and burning of forests (Ploutz, 2011). The point of no return, according to experts is 450-500 PPM. This implies that we are left by only about three decades before it becomes extremely difficult to breathe natural air. Despite the fact that this may sound a long time, so many people will still be alive by that time. Another report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in 2007 projected

Christopher Marlowes Doctor Faustus Essays -- The Life and Death of D

From the outset of Marlowe's play 'Doctor Faustus,' it is clear that Faustus is a man who is unwilling to accept the limitations of human knowledge. In seeking to become more than a man, with no regard for the spiritual consequences, he becomes an example to the religious audience of Marlowe's time of what happens when a man pursues knowledge undeterred by moral boundaries. From the outset of the play, Faustus appears to be driven by his thirst for knowledge. The chorus introduces him as 'gluttedà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦with learning's golden gifts,' and led by his desire to further expand his knowledge he 'surfeits upon cursed necromancy.' Here, I noticed that imagery connected with food and overindulgence is used to illustrate the scholastic gluttony that seems to control Faustus' actions, as though by learning he were feeding a hunger. His own words at the beginning of the play, which are interspersed with the names of works he has studied and phrases in foreign languages, immediately convey his strongly academic nature. Showing the importance Faustus attaches to learning, his first request of Mephastophilis is for knowledge relating to the whereabouts of hell, and he later continues to question the demon on astrology and philosophical issues. He also receives a number of books from both Mephastophilis and Lucifer, which he vows to 'keep as chary as my life,' and uses his twenty four years before damnation to continue his studies, seeking to 'prove cosmography' and becoming renowned for his 'learned skill' as 'his fame spread forth in every land.' Born from 'parents of base stock' and rising to greatness beyond the normal scope of man, I think that Faustus could be seen as a Renaissance hero were it not for the misdirecti... ...ic consequences of his actions. This is reinforced by the judgement of the chorus, who provides the moral framework with which the audience is encouraged to view Faustus. I think that the prologue and epilogue, features of Morality Plays, are particularly important in ensuring that the audience is given the intended impression of the central character, whose fate, the chorus insists at the play's closing, is deserved due to his acting on the desire to 'practice more than heavenly power permits.' When Faustus is finally dragged away to hell at the close of his twenty four years of demonic power, he serves as a reminder to Marlowe's audience of what happens to those who disobey God. Essentially therefore, I agree that the play's message concerns the dangers, in this case spiritual, that a thirst for knowledge poses when coupled with a lack of morality.

Consumer vs Commercial Loans

CONSUMER LOANS VS COMMERCIAL LOANS Prepared By:|   | |   | Rohit Iyer| 11FN-082| Sahil Gupta| 11IB-069| Consumer Loans * Consumer loans are those loans which are required by a person for their personal needs. * If a car loan(finance or lease) is obtained by a company/individual for commercial purposes it is a commercial finance where as if the same kind of car loan is availed by a an individual who would use that car for his personal needs and would not gonna earn rent from that car that is considered a consumer loan.Hence, we can say that consumer loans would not become a source of earning for the borrower, * Examples:- Credit Cards, Personal Finance, Car Finance, Mortgage Finance Features of a personal loan * Variable interest rate: – A Variable Interest Rate Personal Loan has an interest rate that may change during the loan term. Accordingly your personal loan repayment may change throughout the life of the loan. With Variable Interest Rate Personal Loans you can make e arly or additional repayments without incurring any penalties. Fixed interest rate: – A Fixed Interest Rate Personal Loan has an interest rate that stays the same for the full loan term. The loan repayment should not change due to interest rate changes throughout the full term of the loan. With a Fixed Interest Rate Personal Loan you cannot pay extra to get ahead in your repayments. The repayment amount specified in your loan contract needs to be paid each week, fortnight or month as per the arrangement until the loan is paid in full. If additional payments are made, charges may be incurred. Secured: – A secured personal loan is a loan in which the borrower pledges an asset eg a car or property as collateral for the loan. The debt is then secured against the collateral so in the event that the borrower defaults the lender can take possession of the asset used as collateral and may sell it to satisfy the debt by regaining the amount originally lent to the borrower. * Un secured: – An unsecured personal loan requires no collateral or security. This type of loan is supported only by the borrower’s creditworthiness, rather than an item of collateral. Advantages: Personal loans do not require you to produce any collateral or security, like other loans. * There is no agent or middleman while obtaining this loan. * Banks are always ready to offer personal loans. * All that is required is that you need to satisfy the eligibility criteria. * You may use the loan for educational or even holiday purposes. * You can avail a personal loan during times of emergency when you are short of cash, since you need not answer too many questions to the bank. * You may avail personal loans according to your eligibility ranging anywhere from Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 10,00,000. * It is better to avail a personal loan than to borrow cash on your credit card comparing the interest rate on both. Disadvantages: * The eligibility criteria are stricter in case of personal loans, since there is no security required and the paper work is minimum. * The bank checks on you capability to repay more than any other loan due to the same reason. * Since the bank has a higher risk while providing personal loans, they follow a list of approved categories of borrowers. Interest rates for personal loans could range from 12 % to 30 %, while the service charges and prepayment penalty are also very high. Commercial Loans * Commercial Loans are for business purposes. Usually given to  companies  to meet their various business needs. * This category of loan is introduced with the aim to help establishments sustain and grow. * Examples:- Running Finance, Cash Finance, Term Finance, Export Finance, FATR, FAPC II etc Some of its salient features can be described as below: Unrestricted funds: Money extendable under the commercial loans program has no restrictions. A business organization that is eligible for extended line of credit can inevitably find large amount tra nsferred to its bank account. The money can range from small dollar amounts to large sums. * Online Application: Filing of online application for grants is possible. Business owners just need to fill in an online form and submit the same with required documents. * Repayment Assurance: An enterprise owner has to provide assurance of repayment to the lender. This can be done by offering collateral support, credit card, property documents or any other valuables that provide enough assurance. Funds drawn against repayment assurances are kept extended. * Not Restrictive to Business Types: Commercial loans are available to all categories of entrepreneurs without restriction. It means that anyone from any industry can apply for finances. It is unimaginative how this loan support works for all. Just anyone can qualify irrespective of the industry type, small business or large organization. * 24 x7 hr Approval: Business Loan approval is kept open for 24 hours. So, any entrepreneur in an immedi ate need can apply for the grant. Banks are not imaginative and so deploy their work force on a 24Ãâ€"7 hr basis to get an organization funded. It is also true that the support staff does all the nitty-gritty, goes through the details, conducts enquiries, and then forwards the application to make grants available. * Good Credit Scores Required: Financers look for good credit scores before granting loan to an organization. So, an enterprise should work hard to build up its credit scores. Statistical Data:

Simple Random Samples From a Table of Random Numbers

There are a variety of different types of sampling techniques. Of all statistical samples, the simple random sample is indeed the gold standard. In this article, we will see how to use a table of random digits to construct a simple random sample. A simple random sample is characterized by two properties, which we state below: Every individual in the population is equally likely to be chosen for the sampleEvery set of size n is equally likely of being chosen. Simple random samples are important for a number of reasons.  This type of sample guards against bias.  The use of a simple random sample also allows us to apply results from probability, such as the central limit theorem, to our sample. Simple random samples are so necessary that it is important to have a process to obtain such a sample.  We must have a reliable way to produce randomness. While computers will generate so-called  random numbers, these are actually pseudorandom. These pseudorandom numbers are not truly random because hiding in the background, a deterministic process was used to produce the pseudorandom number. Good tables of random digits are the result of random physical processes. The following example goes through a detailed sample calculation. By reading through this example we can see how to construct a simple random sample with the use of a table of random digits. Statement of Problem Suppose that we have a population of 86 college students and want to form a simple random sample of size eleven to survey about some issues on campus. We begin by assigning numbers to each of our students. Since there is a total of 86 students, and 86 is a two digit number, every individual in the population is assigned a two digit number beginning 01, 02, 03, . . . 83, 84, 85. Use of the Table We will use a table of random numbers to determine which of the 85 students should be chosen in our sample. We blindly start at any place in our table and write the random digits in groups of two. Beginning at the fifth digit of the first line we have: 23 44 92 72 75 19 82 88 29 39 81 82 88 The first eleven numbers that are in the range from 01 to 85 are selected from the list. The numbers below that are in bold print correspond to this: 23 44 92 72 75 19 82 88 29 39 81 82 88 At this point, there are a few things to note about this particular example of the process of selecting a simple random sample. The number 92 was omitted because this number is greater than the total number of students in our population. We omit the final two numbers in the list, 82 and 88. This is because we have already included these two numbers in our sample. We only have ten individuals in our sample. To obtain another subject it is necessary to continue to the next row of the table. This line begins: 29 39 81 82 86 04 The numbers 29, 39, 81 and 82 have already been included in our sample. So we see that the first two-digit number that fits in our range and does not repeat a number that has already been selected for the sample is 86. Conclusion of the Problem The final step is to contact students who have been identified with the following numbers: 23, 44, 72, 75, 19, 82, 88, 29, 39, 81, 86 A well-constructed survey can be administered to this group of students and the results tabulated.
